Book Review: Year of the Chameleon 3 (Shadowspell Academy, #6) by D. K. Holmberg

As the final piece of the Shadowspell Academy series unfolded in Year of the Chameleon 3, I found myself both eager and melancholic. This series has been such an immersive journey, and I couldn’t wait to see how D. K. Holmberg would tie all the threads together. With each turn of the page, I could sense the culmination of character growth, relationships, and the stakes that have been building since the beginning. At 213 pages, this concise finale proved that not all great stories need to be lengthy—sometimes all you need is heart and magic.

A Journey of Growth and Revelation

The story picks up with Wild and her crew finding a temporary refuge in Ethan’s mum’s penthouse. The plot thickens as Wild uncovers shocking truths about her family and the connections she has with her adversaries. The revelation that Frost, her ultimate nemesis, is also related to her adds layers of complexity, deepening the stakes not just for Wild but for everyone involved.

What truly struck me was how the characters, especially Wild, have evolved throughout the series. Wild, a once timid girl known as Maribel, has been transformed into a formidable force, exuding strength and determination. Throughout the Culling Trials and beyond, her bond with her friends deepens, turning them into an unstoppable team. I appreciated that not just the main characters like Wild and Rory have grown, but even the side characters, like Freckles and Greg, bring their own unique contributions to the story. Their arcs added richness to the narrative, reminding me of the diverse tapestry of personalities that exist in Wild’s world.

Thematic Depth and Intriguing Tensions

Themes of family, loyalty, and sacrifice resonate throughout the book. I found the moments of tension—especially during confrontations with Frost and the Darkness—to be gripping, and Holmberg expertly captures the emotional weight of these high-stakes battles. The pacing is spot-on; it never felt rushed, yet it didn’t linger too long on any one moment. The balance struck between action and character development is a testament to Holmberg’s writing style—the prose is both engaging and accessible, allowing readers to lose themselves in the story without feeling overwhelmed.

One of my favorite moments is Rory’s confrontation with his father, a scene that encapsulates the personal stakes at play and shows the series’ reinforcement of the idea that sometimes, love means making the hardest choices.

A Bittersweet Farewell

As I reached the end of this book and series, I was left with a bittersweet sense of satisfaction. The conclusion ties up loose ends while also making it clear that the world of Shadowspell Academy will linger in my mind. Holmberg does an impressive job of crafting an ending that feels earned and complete, while still leaving a hint of possibility for future adventures. I am sad to leave Wild’s world behind; she has become a beloved friend, and I will miss her and her crew dearly.

In closing, Year of the Chameleon 3 made me reflect on the importance of courage and the bonds we forge with others. It’s a powerful and uplifting read that reminds us that sometimes, the most profound connections are the ones that not only unify us but also challenge us to be better.
