Book Review: Chain of Iron (The Last Hours, #2) by Cassandra Clare

Oh, Cassandra Clare, how could you do this to us? After finishing Chain of Iron, I found myself gripping my copy and releasing an exasperated sigh, desperately wishing I could leap straight into Chain of Thorns. Has there ever been a book series that has so deliciously tortured its readers? Chain of Iron captivated me with its intricate character dynamics, heart-wrenching decisions, and a plot that left me hanging on every word.

Set in the vibrant world of Edwardian London, the story picks up with Cordelia Carstairs and James Herondale engaged, but oh, if only it were that simple! Their engagement is a mere facade, constructed to save Cordelia’s reputation while James wrestles with his feelings for the enigmatic Grace Blackthorn. Secrets intertwine with the magical and the mundane, creating palpable tension throughout the book. I found myself utterly engrossed in the drama, thinking, "Give me more tea!"—and trust me, this book served it in heaping spoonfuls.

One of the most compelling themes Clare explores is the complexity of heartache. As Magnus Bane wisely notes, “You cannot save people who do not want to be saved.” This quote reverberated through my thoughts as I watched Cordelia navigate her tangled emotions, constantly torn between loyalty, love, and friendship. Every character wrestles with their own struggles, and it’s in these complexities that I found deeper layers to their journeys.

The pacing of Chain of Iron ebbed and flowed beautifully, drawing me in with moments of levity before thrusting me into intense moral dilemmas—yes, I might have shouted at my book several times! Cordelia, ever the brave heart, continues to be my favorite character, and her witty lines and courageous decisions solidified my admiration for her. James, with his charming humor, made me laugh and swoon, especially during his moments of vulnerability.

As I flipped through the pages, the memorable quotes popped out, each resonating with my personal experiences. For instance, when Cordelia reflects, “That love is complicated,” I couldn’t help but feel the truth of that statement—the narrative is laden with relationships that are as disordered as they are beautiful.

However, I must confess, there were moments that took me aback, particularly with Lucie’s character development, which left me feeling a mix of frustration and empathy. The miscommunications and secrets left me wanting to yell at the characters: “Just talk to each other!” But perhaps that’s part of Clare’s brilliance—her ability to evoke such strong feelings from her readers.

In conclusion, if you’re a fan of richly developed characters, emotional rollercoasters, and plots that keep you guessing, Chain of Iron should be next on your TBR. While I personally preferred Chain of Gold, this installment deepened my love for Clare’s universe, leaving me craving more and anticipating the finale. The Last Hours may very well become my favorite Shadowhunter series, depending on how Chain of Thorns resolves these heart-pounding cliffhangers.

So, dear readers, grab a cup of tea (or your favorite comfort drink) and prepare to dive into a world where love, pain, and courage collide—because once you start, you won’t want to stop. Just be prepared to scream and sob. You’ve been warned!
