Book Review: Influencer by Adam Cesare

When I stumbled upon Influencer by Adam Cesare, I felt an odd pull—a blend of curiosity and dread, compounded by the current climate surrounding school safety. With gun violence achingly prevalent and resounding tragedies almost a daily news item, diving into this book seemed almost prophetic. Yet, I was drawn in not only by the disturbing relevance but also by Cesare’s reputation for crafting horror that lingers long after the last page is turned. Believe me, this book does exactly that.

Influencer melds themes of obsession with both social media and violence, providing a mirror to a society that seems more interested in views and likes than in addressing the root of its darkest issues. At the heart of this unsettling narrative is Aaron Fortin, an enigmatic and charismatic minor Instagram celebrity who broadcasts as The Speaker. This masked persona, reminiscent of a young Manson, showcases how power can be wielded in the digital age, leaving a chilling impression of just how deeply our online lives can affect reality.

The character dynamics are as electric as the plot itself. Crystal, the unsuspecting target of Aaron’s intricate schemes, becomes a compelling counterpart, embodying the struggle of identity that so many teenagers face today. As Aaron methodically unravels her social standing, the tension escalates into a gripping game of cat and mouse that was almost too tense to bear. Cesare’s portrayal of this psychological warfare is particularly striking, as he transports us into the minds of these teens, who are constantly striving for validation while battling their demons—both personal and societal.

The writing style is refreshingly sharp and engaging. Cesare expertly balances suspense with moments of dark humor, creating a rhythm that kept me turning the pages. The pacing is relentless; just when you think you’ve caught your breath, another layer of complexity unfurls. The book resonates with echoes of the horror genre, reminiscent of classic slasher films while maintaining its unique voice. The chilling home invasion scene is one such moment that stays with you—a horrifying crescendo that sets the tone for what’s to come.

There were lines I found particularly haunting, like Aaron’s reflection on his growing influence over his peers: "Control is what feels like love." It perfectly encapsulates the essence of his manipulative nature and how terrifyingly relatable it sounds in the context of our hyper-connected world.

One of the greatest strengths of Influencer lies in its ability to mirror the chaotic realities of American youth, marked by isolation and digital addiction. This nuance makes it far from a mere narrative about teen violence—it’s a commentary on societal indifference, begging us to consider the consequences of our inaction in the face of escalating crises.

If you’re drawn to psychological thrillers that delve deep into the psyche of disturbed characters or enjoy narratives that make you confront uncomfortable truths about society, then Cesare’s Influencer is a must-read. It’s unsettling yet thought-provoking, leaving a lasting impact that will resonate long after the final chapter.

In this moment, with the world so insistent on glossing over its true horrors, Influencer dares to confront them head-on, providing an engrossing journey through the dark corridors of influence, control, and the perilous journey of growing up in the spotlight. And for me, it was both a fascinating and necessary read.
