Book Review: Today I’ll Talk to Him (Die Today-Reihe, #1)

When I first stumbled upon Today I’ll Talk to Him by the talented author I discovered on TikTok, my curiosity was piqued. As someone who’s often had a rocky relationship with the German New Adult genre, this novel felt like a daring leap into unfamiliar waters. With that in mind, I dove in—only to surface with a mixed bag of impressions.

Character Quirks and Frustrations

Our protagonist, Layla, is indeed a well-rounded character, and I appreciate how the author crafted her. However, that roundness often translates into her being overwhelmingly awkward and naive. Every few pages, Layla finds herself in a cringe-worthy situation that made me want to put the book down—and almost did. Her socially awkward demeanor is punctuated by an eye-roll-inducing mix of whimsy and a penchant for childish phrases. I mean, who utters "Groble" during an intimate moment? It sent me reeling back to memories of cringe-worthy anime tropes that I thought I had left behind.

Layla’s obsession with her high school crush borders on the juvenile. The way she reacts to other girls looking at him feels so over-the-top that I can’t help but shake my head. She broadcasts her crush and personal details to her Twitch community while barely managing to conceal her real name—an obvious recipe for disaster that she seems blissfully unaware of. And that lack of common sense? Let’s just say I often found myself exasperated.

Amid this, there’s Henry, who caught my attention as a genuinely likable character. Unfortunately, Layla mislabels his quieter, more introspective nature as laziness, missing the nuance in his reality—a solid critique of how often we jump to conclusions about others without understanding their circumstances.

Writing Style and Pacing

The writing style is fluid and quick, making it easy to breeze through the narrative. Still, it occasionally felt simplistic, lacking the depth I crave in character interactions. The humor did shine through at times, but other moments felt disconnected, as if the author were trying too hard to capture the essence of real conversations without ever having partaken in one. The pacing was another hurdle, especially as we neared the last hundred pages, where the ubiquitous misunderstanding trope reared its head. Having Layla evade confrontation felt tired and, frankly, predictable.

Notably, the setting lacked authenticity. While I appreciate that New Adult often leans on the college campus trope, this felt forced. It seemed like a patchwork of German culture sprinkled with American names, which left me questioning its authenticity throughout the experience.

So, will I be picking up a potential sequel? Probably not. But there were good moments amidst my frustrations. The depiction of female friendship and the absence of toxic dynamics in the romantic development was refreshing. However, did I regret spending 16.50 on this? A little, yes.

Today I’ll Talk to Him may resonate with teenage readers or those eager for a light-hearted, albeit awkward, exploration of high school crushes and social missteps. For me, it cemented my feelings toward the New Adult genre; it remains a space with vast potential, yet it often leaves me wanting more depth and believability.

All in all, while this novel didn’t quite find its mark with me, those who enjoy quirky characters and humorous scenarios might still find value in Layla’s journey—just maybe keep your cringe meter handy!
